“Companies play fast and free with customers’ debit order dates”

Customers generally choose the dates of their debit orders based on when they are paid.

This is quite an important consideration.

When service and credit providers like banks decide to charge customers earlier than the contractually specified date, they hear the complaints loud and clear, says consumer ninja Wendy Knowler.

Banks generally do not penalize their customers if there are not enough funds in their account when an advance debit order is processed, she notes.

But what happens when it is not a bank that carries out the pre-debit?

Knowler tells the story of Mr Nkosi who contacted her about an early debit notification from Webafrica due to the public holiday this week.

Its debit order is scheduled for the first of every month because it is paid on the last day of the month, regardless of the weekend.

Mr. Nkosi asked for the money to go later than earlier.

I explained to them that it would come back unpaid and I would face a penalty of R180 from my bank, as well as a mess in my credit file.

Knowler took on the case and was given the royal run – automated responses, already closed “tickets”, etc., etc.

“It’s diabolical that customer service and general engagement with the public is outsourced to technology in this way.”

Why do companies always take the money earlier and not later than the agreed date? she laments.

Here’s an idea: how about a treatment on May 3, to prevent people like Mr. Nkosi from becoming stressed and financially prejudiced?
